After some great networking and refreshments, Mike Rossi gave the crowd an energetic and exciting introduction to Pratt & Whitney Canada’s approach to delivering the best products to the market by staying connected to the needs of their customers.

Rémi Robache then shared the approach and achievements that P&WC has been using to prove the viability of hybrid electric propulsion. The presentation ranged from assessing battery technology for full electric solutions, to settling on a hybrid design approach using 1MW electric motor for additional takeoff power with a 1MW thermal engine to handle sustained cruise power. He walked the assembled group through some of the technical challenges they are resolving, like managing the high voltage transmission through the airframe, to selecting the best battery technology (balancing thermal runaway parameters, energy density, service life, etc.…) and managing the increased risk of over-torquing components due to the rapid power delivery of electric motors.

Then retired RCAF Major and current associate director at P&WC Pierre Lalancette shared his “one fight, one team” philosophy to accomplishing missions. He shared the origin of this philosophy at the US Army base in Fort Bliss where the RCAF helicopter crews were tasked with retrieving a US Army soldier that was injured while training in difficult terrain, where all the members of the team, from the pilots, to ground crews, to the equipment OEMs and the training personnel back home all do their part to ensure mission success. Pierre went on to share stories from several deployments over the years, in the middle east, Kosovo, long ferry flights to Haiti, and emergency response work home in Canada, in every story is a common theme where there is a massive team behind every successful mission.

A heartfelt thank you from the VFS Montreal-Ottawa chapter to the speakers and to Pratt & Whitney for hosting a great event.
