{"id":610,"date":"2024-04-24T11:29:31","date_gmt":"2024-04-24T16:29:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mtlott.vtol.org\/?p=610"},"modified":"2024-04-25T09:05:25","modified_gmt":"2024-04-25T14:05:25","slug":"event-summary-the-role-of-helicopters-in-guarding-coastal-sovereignty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mtlott.vtol.org\/?p=610","title":{"rendered":"Event Summary &#8211; The Role of Helicopters in Guarding Coastal Sovereignty"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Montreal-Ottawa Chapter returned to the Ottawa region for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, with an event on April 11<sup>th<\/sup> at General Dynamics Mission Systems \u2013 Canada (GDMS-C).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark McKeeman from Transport Canada started the event with a presentation on marine wildlife surveillance in the St. Lawrence Gulf, highlighting the use of remotely piloted aerial systems (RPAS) and the transition from unmanned fixed-wing to VTOL RPAS. In addition to discussing aeronautical and operational challenges, Mark delved into the application of artificial intelligence for identifying marine wildlife from images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/mtlott.vtol.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-612\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mtlott.vtol.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mtlott.vtol.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mtlott.vtol.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mtlott.vtol.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/1-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/mtlott.vtol.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/1-640x480.jpg 640w, https:\/\/mtlott.vtol.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/1.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Following Mark&#8217;s presentation, two GDMS-C experts addressed maritime helicopter challenges from operational and integration perspectives. Tim Garriok shared insights from a pilot&#8217;s viewpoint, discussing the challenges of operating a military helicopter at sea. Jeremy Graaskamp then outlined the engineering challenges involved in integrating highly complex technologies while ensuring user actions remain simple.
