But what is the fuel source that will drive this future? The Vertical Flight Society Montreal-Ottawa chapter invites to learn about some promising work being done in this space in a fun, casual environment suitable for catching up and networking with you peers.

Speakers include Thomas Parsons joining us from Bell’s Headquarters in Fort Worth, TX to talk about the work being done to accomplish the world’s first single engine helicopter flight using 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) with the Bell 505. We will also be joined by Dr. Pierre Gauthier from Siemens to discuss the research being done into the use of hydrogen in gas turbine engines. And finally, Etienne Ferland from H55 Canada will walk us through the process of electrifying existing aircraft and the exciting new Canadian footprint of this Swiss company.

Please join us to discuss the future of aviation energy sources at Les 3 Brasseurs Centropolis (in Laval, QC).

Dinner is not included, but finger food will be available and you will be able to order from Les 3 Brasseurs. Presentations begin at 6:30, there will be time for networking before and after.

https://maps.app.goo.gl/ECMx1UEqfjQeM4gn6

About the speakers:

• Thomas Parsons has been a propulsion engineer at Bell Helicopter for 26 years. He is currently the Associate Technical Fellow for Propulsion, as well as an ODA Unit Member supporting FAA certification activities. He is an active participant on industry committees including SAE S-12 Powered Lift Propulsion (former chair), SAE A-22 Fire Protection and Flammability Testing (rotorcraft group lead), and the VFS Propulsion Committee. His recent sustainability efforts include participating on an international consortium evaluating alternative fire extinguishing agents to replace to Halon and leading the world’s first single engine helicopter flight using 100% sustainable aviation fuel.

• Dr. Pierre Gauthier is a Combustion Key Expert and Global Technical Focal Point for Combustion Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) at Siemens Energy, where he is responsible for the Combustion CFD Methods and Tools Roadmap and Strategy. He has 35 years of experience in the Gas Turbine Industry, 22 of which, closely tied to the Energy Industry with Rolls-Royce and now Siemens.

A Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor of Low Emissions Combustion Modelling at Cranfield University in the UK, where he lectures and supervises Research Fellows, PhDs, and Master’s students in Decarbonization and Low Emissions Hydrogen Technologies. Developing Methods and Tools for simulating scenarios to facilitate the transition toward Green Energy solutions and a Hydrogen Economy.

Dr. Gauthier is also an Affiliate Associate Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Concordia University in Montréal, Canada, where he lectures in Combustion, Gas Dynamics, and Aerodynamics. He has published several papers on Combustion Modeling and Computational Methods.

• Etienne Ferland is Managing Director of H55 Canada which broke ground on its new facility in Québec in October 2023.
